The widowmaker – Porsche 991 GT2 RS

The 991 Porsche GT2 RS, a long awaited car for Porsche fans. Finally in 2017, Porsche released the predecessor to their 2010 997 GT2 RS. The GT2 RS is based on Porsche‘s turbo platform and represents the brand’s most track focused and highest performing road car. Unlike the turbo models however, the GT products are purely rear-wheel drive. Especially the 997 model was a very evolving car to drive and it needed a skillful driver in order to operate it correctly. This car found itself in various incidents and that’s why it was nicknamed “the widowmaker“. The 991 GT2 RS public unveiling took place at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed after it was teaserd in the Forza Motorsport 7 video game. This car features a 3.8 liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine producing 700 hp and 750 Nm of torque. This makes the 991 GT2 RS the most powerful production 911 of all time. The lightning-fast 7-Speed PDK transmission catapults the supercar from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds and it goes on to a topspeed of over 347 km/h.

Going fast on a straight line is one thing, going fast around turns is another. The Porsche GT2 RS does this unlike any other car. In September 2017, Porsche proved the car’s track capability by setting the Nürburgring track record for a production car with a time of 6:47,3. That time is 11 seconds faster than Porsche‘s 2013 hypercar, the 918 Spyder and around 5 seconds faster than the previous record holder, the Lamborghini Huracan Performante. The record car featured Porsche‘s optional Weissach package. This track focused package saves around 30 kilos of weight to the “normal“ GT2 RS and comes with a price of 17.850 Euros. Additionally you can add the ultra light weight magnesium wheels with a price of 12.000 Euro.

The 991 GT2 RS was not strictly limited to build numbers. Experts guess that there are approximately two to three thousand cars around the world. The factory MSRP amounted around 285.000 Euros. Around 90% of the cars were delivered with the optional Weissach package, which means that almost all cars easily exceeded the 300.000 Euro mark. Despite the hefty pricetag, the demand for the new GT2 RS was overwhelming and impossible to get from new without good connections to the Porsche brand. Porsche‘s success with the car didn‘t just show itself on the racetrack but also on the second-hand car market. Early GT2 RS examples were sold with a premium of around 200.000 Euros. Right now a solid specced GT2 RS with low mileage will cost you around 380.000 to 410.000 Euros. Cars with PTS colors (paint to sample) are very hard to find and are worth distinctly more than that. Especially colors such as Oak Gruen Metallic, British Racing Green and Reviera Blue are much sought after.
